Couples therapy, also known as marriage counseling or pre-marital counseling, is a supportive and collaborative process designed to help couples at any stage of their relationship. Whether you are seeking to enhance communication, navigate through traumatic events, rebuild trust, or simply strengthen your bond, couples therapy can provide a safe and neutral environment to address these issues. Our sessions focus on the relationship as a whole, while also considering the individual needs and dynamics of each partner.
In couples counseling at Planted Practice, we aim to create a secure and open space for you and your partner to discuss and resolve relationship challenges. During our sessions, you will learn practical tools and strategies to improve communication, understand behavioral patterns, and foster a deeper connection. Our goal is to empower you with the skills needed to nurture and maintain a healthy relationship beyond the therapy room.
Our therapists are highly trained in various couples counseling methods, including the renowned Gottman Method. During my master’s program at the University of South Dakota, I completed Gottman Levels 1 and 2 training. This rigorous program equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of effective therapeutic tools and interventions. I bring this expertise to our practice in San Luis Obispo, integrating these proven techniques in a straightforward and accessible manner.
Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the Gottman Method is an evidence-based approach to couples counseling. It is built on the Sound Relationship House Theory, which emphasizes building a strong foundation for your relationship. The method focuses on improving communication, increasing intimacy, respect, and affection, and resolving conflicts in a healthy and constructive way. By working through each component of the Sound Relationship House, couples can strengthen their connection and foster long-term relationship satisfaction.
At Planted Practice, we uphold a no secrets policy in couples counseling. This means that confidentiality is maintained between the therapist and both partners collectively. While most sessions are conducted with both partners present, there may be instances where individual sessions are necessary to gain a deeper understanding of each partner’s perspective. Any significant issues or topics discussed individually will be brought into joint sessions to ensure openness and prevent misunderstandings. This transparency is crucial for fostering trust and supporting the couple’s journey together.
